Shallow Venda

September 1, 2011

Shall I describe the people next? Well, I’m not in “Deep Venda” like the other people in my language group are. Venda has a very distinct culture, and the word on the street is that they believe they are descendants of Jews who went to Africa. Because I’m on the border of Venda, there’s a strong presence of Sepedi and Tsonga in my village. The result is that the place isn’t very traditional and there isn’t an obvious dominant African culture. The place is maybe even… normal?

That’s not to say it’s not very deep rural. By a car, it takes maybe half an hour to reach a paved road from the village, and the main method of transportation is hitch-hiking. Taxis will take you into the village but they won’t come to take you out.

My family has three women and two tiny children. That will take some getting used to.
